EVALUATION

Subjects

Four subjects have been chosen to participate in this test. All are female, ranging in age from twenty-seven to sixty. All are already familiar with the old Kyocera Multi-User Copier administrative function interface and were unable to understand how to identify the number of copies a patron had used and add copies to a patron’s account until a service representative had been sent out on-site on two occasions. The tests will be performed on a typical day between 3 and 4PM in the law library where the Kyocera Copier is in use.

Tasks and briefing

The subjects will be informed that this prototype is a re-designed interface for the Kyocera Copier. They will be given a set of written instructions that reads, "Patron 1242 pays you one copy. Your goal is to get a screen that shows you how many copies they currently have, and add the one copy they just paid you for to their account #1242. In order to advance to the next screen, you must hit the correct key. Please count the number of copies that patron 1242 had before you entered the one copy, and also count the number of incorrect clicks that you make while completing this process. Thank you for participating."

At the conclusion of the process, the subjects will be given a de-briefing consisting of written instructions that read, "You have finished. Please note the number of copies #1242 had before you added the one copy. Please also note the number of clicks it took you to finish. Thanks."

After that, the subjects will be verbally thanked for participating, and informed that this test was an attempt to stream-line the manner by which the Kyocera keeps track of patron copies, and by which copies are added to the Kyocera, by distinguishing buttons frequently used in this process with added color, by altering the administrative menus, and by combining the counter and output limit into one function.
